Zimbabwean Writer Simbarashe Steyn Kundizeza Wins the 2026 Caine Prize for African Writing for ‘The Blue Fighter’

Zimbabwean writer Simbarashe Steyn Kundizeza has won the 2026 Caine Prize for African Writing, taking home the £10,000 award for his short story ‘The Blue Fighter’ published in The Shallow Tales Review.

African literature has a major reason to celebrate as Zimbabwean writer Simbarashe Steyn Kundizeza takes home the prestigious 2026 Caine Prize for African Writing. Announced for his remarkable short story ‘The Blue Fighter’, originally published in 2025 by The Shallow Tales Review, Kundizeza secures the £10,000 award after emerging from an exceptional 2026 shortlist. Often dubbed Africa’s premier short story distinction, the Caine Prize for African Writing annually honours outstanding African literary voices, bringing worldwide visibility to compelling creative narratives across the continent. Based in Harare, Simbarashe Steyn Kundizeza is a Zimbabwean novelist, thriller writer, and Associate Editor at African Writer Magazine. Before claiming the 2026 Caine Prize, Kundizeza earned recognition across the literary world, notably winning the 2024 Island Prize for Debut African Fiction for his novel manuscript Freelance, participating in the 2025 LOATAD Black Atlantic Residency, and earning a finalist spot in the 2018 Africa Book Club Short Story Competition. His triumph with ‘The Blue Fighter’ cements his place among contemporary African literary greats. The winning story ‘The Blue Fighter’ offers a deeply moving exploration of family dynamics, sacrifice, and survival under tough conditions. The narrative follows Tinashe, a young boy whose family falls into financial hardship after his father leaves his profession to pursue his passion for building fish tanks. As money becomes increasingly scarce, Tinashe’s mother is forced to choose between her family’s survival and her husband’s dream. Examining fatherhood, ambition, and financial hardship, ‘The Blue Fighter’ examines the complicated ways in which family circumstances can shape the people within them. To claim the prize, Kundizeza stood out among a talented group of five shortlisted writers from across the continent. The 2026 Caine Prize shortlist also featured Kenyan author Gladwell Pamba for ‘The Last Shop’ (published by Jahazi Press), Cameroonian writer Melara Mvogdobo for ‘Dieu Merci!’ (published by Literatur.Review), Nigerian writer and critic Akinwande Jordan for ‘So Long Now It’s Starting To Look Like Eternity’ (published by Naira Books), and Egyptian author and translator Yasmine Zohdi for ‘The Absence of Stains’ (published by The Republic).

The 2026 judging panel, led by journalist Bola Mosuro, praised Kundizeza’s narrative for its emotional depth and technical precision. Speaking on the winning story, Chair of Judges Bola Mosuro said: Simbarashe Steyn Kundizeza draws readers in from the opening lines and never lets go. With luminous prose and characters who feel instantly familiar, this moving story explores denial, frustration, loyalty and quiet strength in a way that will resonate with people everywhere. Gripping, moving and beautifully crafted, Simbarashe captures the complexities of family, denial and devotion with remarkable emotional power. It’s a brilliant and unforgettable piece of storytelling told in a deceptively simple manner, but which has a profound and lasting impact. Reflecting on what this monumental recognition means for his career and creative journey, Simbarashe Steyn Kundizeza shared: Winning the Caine Prize means a great deal to me. I’ve been writing for several years, often without knowing where the work would take me, just fitting it around everything else in my life. To have a story drawn from my own experiences recognised at this level makes all those everyday compromises feel worthwhile. Most of all, it gives me a little more belief that I can keep making room for this life as a writer.
